WordPress 2.5 an Unsolicited Critic #1

I love WordPress. I really do! Everybody who knows me, knows that I LOVE WordPress. I went to WordPress.org searching for something today. Oops! All shiny and new, no worries looking good…. eh… It took me two minutes to find the keyword search.
It is where you would expect it to be, but the search input field is in camouflage! It was so disappointed of being a text field it dressed itself as a button! Poor thing! …

I am not easy to scare, but now I am really scared to install 2.5 with its shiny new administration skin.*

*) sorry for this little rant :-)…

I was really nervous about it too, every preview of it I saw just made my eyes itch. Now that I’ve worked with it for a few days I love it, but it was an adjustment. :P

Fortunately there are ways to skin the admin interface, which I plan to (attempt) to learn sometime soon. ^_^

… that’s what Jakob Nielsen (Usability Fascist Guru) calls:
    Non-Standard GUI Controls
and he lists this as error number one in:
    Top-10 Application-Design Mistakes
    http://www.useit.com/alertbox/application-mistakes.html

… as hard as they(Wordpress) try they will always stand out as the epiphany of script-kiddies doing spaghetti-code instead of going back to school ;-)

    How very nice for him.

Forgot to add, the WordPress “script kiddies” didn’t design that search field, the design firm they hired did. I hardly think that one mistake is representative of the entirety of the WordPress developers ability and code.

I also find it rather distressing whenever someone turns the fact that someone is young as an insult. As if not being as old as someone else is something offensive that they’ve done on purpose. I didn’t think it was clever when I was younger, and I don’t find it so now.

It pretty childish if you ask me. ;)

    @TheWeeJenny

Hey don’t take my comment to seriously, this is foremost an expression of aggrieved haughtiness by a Ruby on Rails programmer who’s girlfriend prefers to work with WP… ;-)

For the implied youth-bashing.. this is just the envy of an older guy….

Still the WP community is reliable for their decisions. And yes there are at least a million better examples for mistakes in the WP project ;-)

“pretty childish” - yes maybe but i guess that’s Ok as long as I don’t take myself to seriously.

I still love wordpress ^_^… But I feel a little bit guilty being such a bitchy girlfriend. If I had two live times I would do all the awesome ruby on rails stuff… for now I do not even find the time to update my version 2.1, which obviously has some mayor security issues. I even got a “Notice to WordPress users from Technorati”…
    ARGH… I would love to be a cat and have 9 lives…

    xxx
