you are safe with me tonight, my first woodcut edition

I went and joined a print making course at Inverlochy Art School in Wellington. Basia Smolnicki’s eight week (3 hours a week) crash course through printmaking was covering an introduction to printmaking, colographs, woodcut, dry point and acid etching and I really loved it.
I never ever thought that woodcut printmaking would be something I am interested in, but the moment I sat down and began to cut into the wood (using a sharp tool ^_^) I knew that this is working really well for me

I was very lucky to get a nice old book press form trademe
my book press
… and after several visits to the french art shop I was finally set up to do my first print at home.

It is really very rare that I am really proud of any of my artwork, but this is definitely going in the right direction. Seeing that I went into printmaking to get away from my mac, this is a even more natural process. With screen printing you still have scan and prepare the images, fight with photo emulsion and exposure time… with woodcut and drypoint you just sit down and get going. I really love doing it and I hope to find time to do some more.

The prints will be available at felt and esty in October…

Thanks! I love your little wooden creatures. I am working on something similar with driftwood, but my prototypes still do not get the right look :-)…
