The Magic Bottle by Camille Rose Garcia

I stumbled upon The Magic Bottle by Camille Rose Garcia (2006, fantagraphics) in the graphic novel section in the library this week and had to take it home! It tells the story of Lulu, Sad Little Turtle and Mr. Blue. They are on a quest to save Peppermint Island the last bit of nature and free will not overrun by The Company.

The Los Angeles-based lowbrow artist Camille Rose Garcia produces ‘gothic’ and a bit creepy paintings and prints. Her very inventive style seems to reference cartoon from the 30ties like Betty Boop or early Walt Disney work like Snowwhite. The texts might be a bit patronising, seeing that the stunning visual language would be great next to more ‘Robert Dale like’ texts… but a good read and a great graphic novel.

These are Matreshkas by Russian artist Irina Troiskaya. This set of strange characters includes an ant-eater, sloth, koala, armadillo, Alcatraz azure, duck-bill and echidna. And Irina is right by saying “Itâ€™s good to be in a little bit weird company”….

There are these unbelievable moments where you find something so unique, so magical that you just look at it speechless and in awe. For me this exact moment is when craft becomes art and this is little creature is an example. It is one of a two part artwork titled self-love “The last hug” by psychoticfiction Barcelona, Spain. The creatures are called nonis. Inside they have a handmade skeleton, build from wood that allows them to take different postures.

You can buy them at the nonis etsy shop. But you have to check out psychoticfiction’s Flickr photostream first and roam through this strange world, visiting these strange creatures.
